Prayer Labyrinth
The Christian life is often described as a pilgrimage with God. For centuries, labyrinths have served as a model for this journey of faith, one that draws us closer to God and our neighbors.
A labyrinth is an ancient, but simple tool to help quiet the mind and aid in communicating with God while contemplating who He is. It is a single, winding path that leads you toward the center and God’s presence, before leading you outward again.
The Second Baptist Labyrinth is nestled on the northwest section of our property behind the gymnasium. It is free and open to the public. The closest entrance is off of North Perkins Road.
Our campus is also a registered arboretum! A number of gorgeous trees can be found around the labyrinth.
Walking Guidance
There is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. The most important aspect is being open to the whispers and gentle movements of God’s Spirit.
Remember
Prepare by breathing deeply and clearing your mind of worries, distractions and tension. God’s presence here.
Release
Begin to walk, releasing troubles and opening your heart to feelings, thoughts, and hopes that enter. Move at a slow pace.
Receive
The center is for prayer and meditation. Sit or stand, lingering as long as you like, listening and sharing with God.
Return
Moving away from the center is a time to absorb all you have heard or felt and prepare for a return to everyday life.
Other Suggestions
Ask God a question and listen for an answer.
Pray for yourself on the way in, stop to experience God’s love in the center, and pray for others on the way out. This can be done in reverse order as well.
As you walk, recite the Lord’s Prayer, a familiar scripture, a Christian creed, doxology, or hymn lyrics.
