Our Village

At Second Baptist, we seek to be generous with people where we find them and offer God’s grace and goodness to them. Part of how we do this is inviting our neighbors to join us in using our facilities throughout the week and year. Here are just a few that call our church home.

Men’s Basketball Ministry

For decades, men have played basketball at the Second Baptist Church gym at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Led by Pastor Sidney Malone, the ministry uses basketball to reach out and mentor young adult men.

Game Changers

Led by Coach Tre’ Denton, Game Changers is a basketball program meeting two evenings a week in the Second Baptist gym.  Supporters of the program teach participants not only the fundamentals of basketball but also the fundamentals of life and faith.

Ms. Roz Learning Playdate

Ms. Roz Learning Playdate is as much a positive community as it is an educational support program for children.  During the school year, children meet after school for homework help and mentoring.  There are also monthly parent fellowships, date night events, and weekend playdates.  For holidays and school breaks (including summer), Ms. Roz expands to full day programming. And that is merely a portion of the support Ms. Roz provides for the children and families in her program.  Ms. Roz also works intentionally to involve the children in her program in church activities regularly.

Collegiate School of Memphis

The Collegiate School of Memphis is a private, college preparatory school, providing sixth through twelfth-grade scholars a  quality education in a structured, safe, and caring environment where each student may fully realize their God-given potential.  Our relationship with CSM began when hundreds of their scholars began volunteering at our Second Baptist Pumpkin Patch, a tradition that still continues.  In appreciation of their many years of volunteering, Second Baptist created the John N. Avis Memorial Scholarship to support CSM students seeking postsecondary education. Funded by money raised from the pumpkin patch, the scholarship is named for Second Baptist Church member and career educator John Avis who also served as CSM’s first Head of School.

Pickleball

A small group of pickleball enthusiasts meet each Wednesday morning in the Second Baptist Church gym and also coordinate monthly pickleball tournaments. The group purchased nets and paddles for church use as well as leading beginner pickleball instruction for youth and children at Second Baptist Church.

East Memphis Classical Conversations

Classical Conversations is a homeschooling group designed to help children thrive academically, spiritually, and socially.  Meeting on Fridays at Second Baptist Church, experienced homeschool parents serve as Tutors, teaching subjects and promoting the importance of learning in community.

Additional Partnerships

A variety of organizations and ministries, people, and groups use our facilities. We serve as an election site and welcome thousands of voters every year. Several support groups host their meetings at our campus. Faithful racquetball players use our court and a karate dojo meets twice a week. The Boy Scouts host their annual wilderness training on our grounds. And much more.

Our church is much more than a community that gathers on Sunday. We are a village of activity with people who matter to Jesus, whether they attend on Sundays or not. People who have stories and lives and gifts and burdens. It is a privilege to be a part of their story. Our hope is that they might know something of the great love Christ has for them by how we welcome, encourage, and seek to know them.
