Dr. Stephen Cook, Senior Pastor
Stephen graduated from Wake Forest University (Bachelor of Arts in Religion), Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (Master of Divinity), Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University (Master of Theology in Pastoral Theology and Counseling), and Columbia Theological Seminary (Doctor of Ministry). He has served churches in North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia prior to coming to Second in November, 2010. He and his wife, Amy, have two small children, Benjamin and Jonathan. Stephen’s interests include travel (trying to get to all 50 states!), sports, reading, and investing time in his family. Contact Stephen.
Rev. Daniel Johnson, Associate Minister: Congregational Formation and Missions
Daniel, his wife Mekea, and their daughters Olivia and Audrey joined the ministry of Second Baptist in January, 2012. Previously serving churches in St. Louis, Georgia and Virginia, Daniel has also written youth missions curriculum for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship [link], served on the coordinating council of the CBF of MO, and on the Youth Advisory Board of Passport Camps. As Associate Minister: Congregational Formation and Missions, Daniel appreciates partnering with parents and the caring adults of Second Baptist to create a meaningful and relevant ministry for students and helping the congregation fulfill its calling to work and serve outside the walls of the church. Daniel is an avid sports fan, following his alma mater, Indiana University, in basketball and the Nebraska Cornhuskers in football. Although a longtime New York Yankees fan, after living almost nine years in St. Louis the family adopted the St. Louis Cardinals. Rev. Julia Goldie Day, Associate Minister: Families and Congregational Care
Julia graduated from Anderson University (Bachelor of Arts: Painting and Drawing) and studied Pastoral Care and Counseling at the School of Divinity of Gardner-Webb University. She was ordained into Christian ministry by Clearview Baptist Church. Julia served three churches in South Carolina before joining Second Baptist in the spring of 2016. She enjoys utilizing her creative background in ministry and remains a practicing visual artist. Julia is married to Ben Day and they have three children: Jada, Barak, and Jillian. Contact Julia.
Mr. Larry Denman, Associate Minister: Music and Worship
Larry’s formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts in music from Millsaps College (2009), studying music theory at the University of Southern Mississippi (2010-2012), and a Master of Music in choral conducting from the University of Memphis (2016). Larry has conducted and taught adults in church and community choirs and has an equal amount of experience working with youth and children’s choirs. Additionally, he has experience leading handbell ensembles and church orchestras while also being a proficient instrumentalist and soloist. We are excited to have Larry, along with his wife, Catherine, and their daughter, Adelaide (age 2), as a part of our congregation. Contact Larry.
Tommy Sexton, Recreation Director and Assistant to Youth Minister
Tommy Sexton came to the ministry of Second Baptist in August of 2002, as the percussionist for the Music Ministry. He has played percussion at several churches and congregations in Tennessee, Mississippi and Florida, and has recorded and performed with several artists and theater orchestras in the Memphis area. Tommy attended Florida State University and the University of Memphis. He became the Recreation Director for Second Baptist in December of 2008. In addition to his church duties, Tommy can also be seen working on the sidelines, in the press box, or behind the scenes for the Athletic Media Relations departments of the University of Memphis, Christian Brothers University or Rhodes College. Tommy also officiates football for the TSSAA and works as the main scoreboard operator for the Memphis Redbirds (AAA affiliate for the St. Louis Cardinals). Contact Tommy.
