Grove Academy

Grove Music AcademyThe Julia C. Pilgrim Music Academy was begun in the fall of 1998 as a way to work with Second Baptist Church in providing quality musical training for people in the community. Along with our very strong and active piano program, we are fortunate to have some of the finest strings teachers in the mid-south.

Second Baptist provides a great place for lessons, recitals, programs and summer camps. The church members offer a warm and loving environment for students to grow in their music and performance skills. In fact, the encouragement and support teachers and students receive from the membership is an important aspect of the academy.

Lessons are offered to people of all ages who are interested in learning to play an instrument or improving their present level of competency. This is not just for school-aged children. Preschoolers can enroll in the “Music for Little Mozarts” program, and many adults are showing interest in either first time lessons or returning to lessons to enhance their skills.

Music for Little Mozarts: This series provides appropriate piano instruction for four, five, and six year olds. It is designed to capture the young child’s curiosity and desire for learning to play the piano at an early age.

Music for Life-Time Wellness: This is a recreational musical experience designed specifically for older adults. Regardless of prior musical experience, adults learn to creatively express themselves in a fun, multi-faceted music-making activity. It’s never too late to have fun and enjoy playing the piano.

Musikgarten: One of our strings teachers is certified in the Muskgarten program for children from infant through school-aged children. Group sessions introduce young children to the world of music and prepare them for further study if they choose.

For more information on any of the above programs or private and group instruction in piano or violin and strings, please contact the director of our program, Julia C. Pilgrim at 901.683.0111 or

Come by the church sometime and you may see one of our many musical events in progress. We host the Greater Memphis Music Teachers Association local auditions in the spring, strings concerts, piano recitals, dulcimer festivals, and performances along with the many musical events presented by our on-going music ministry at Second Baptist Church. God has given us such a beautiful and inspiring gift of music. May we worship and honor Him as we lift our voices and instruments to Him in praise and adoration.
